Description

erosion of the mangrove forest near Nieuw-Nickerie

Samenvatting (Dutch description)

Mangrove forests worldwide are in decline. In 2009 they covered about 181,000 km2 of coastline (Alongi et al., 2016) and it has been estimated that once they covered about 200,000 km2 of the world (Duke et al., 2007). Almost one third of the mangrove ecosystems has been lost in the past 50 years (Alongi et al., 2016) and it has been estimated that in total 50% have been lost of this 200,000 km2 (Gómez, 2018). These numbers do not agree with each other, the reporting on mangrove forest covering varies among articles and websites. Mangroves are now being lost at a rate of 1 to 2% per year, an equal or even greater rate than the disappearing coral reefs nearby (Duke et al., 2007). 90% of the 120 countries that have mangroves are on the poverty scale, where the mangroves often are used for economic resources. In 26 of these countries, the mangroves have almost disappeared (Duke et al., 2007). In 2016 13,671,431 ha of mangroves were left in the world, with 76,591 ha in Suriname (Mangrove Restoration, n.d.). 12% of the once thriving mangroves in Suriname have been lost already, although it is estimated that 8% could be restored again. In the whole of South-America, the area of mangroves lost is estimated at 6%, this is comparable to other regions in the world: Australia and New Zealand (4%), East-Asia (8%), East and Southern Africa (6%) and globally (7%). This means that Suriname is losing mangrove area almost twice as fast as globally
