PARAMARIBO – The U.S. Embassy in Paramaribo has become the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Certified building in Suriname. The Embassy earned the silver level of LEED.

LEED certification is an internationally recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. LEED-certified buildings are designed to lower operating costs while increasing asset value, reduce waste sent to landfills, conserve energy and water, be healthier and safer for occupants, and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

The Embassy design responds to the intense sun and rain with large overhangs, sunshades, and extensive covered outdoor areas. The building materials have a high percentage of recycled content.

The Embassy is designed to reduce energy costs through the use of high efficiency lighting, occupancy sensors, a light-colored cool roof, and variable frequency drives for pumps, fans, and motors. Advanced water conservation strategies are also employed to reduce consumption through the use of air-cooled chillers, and low-flush and low-flow plumbing fixtures.
