Te Papa Ōtākaro Avon River Park

Rainwater Harvesting

Created at: 28 Oct 2022

Description

Spanning over 48,000 sq.m is the restoration of Avon River that has become one of the largest public space transformations in New Zealand costing approximately $147 million. Being in the heart of the Christchurch city centre the river had suffered from the earthquakes and this created a lot of challenges to overcome for the final transformative urban landscape that Te Papa Ōtākaro has become. The first improvements were made back in 2013 after the earthquakes in 2011, restoration of the river begun in 2014 and has been maintained since then. By restoring areas around the river such as the park invites the public to admire and enjoy the presence of the river and its ecological improvement that it brings to the city. The river itself has now become a space where feeding eels at the terraces have become a norm. This is a great example of how restoring a river has a such a huge impact on not only the ecology of the river but also the people around it and their wellbeing.
