Pilot Landschapsinclusieve Landbouw De Marne verbetering oppervlaktewaterkwaliteit

Water Quality Monitoring and Improvement

Biodiversity

Created at: 19 Feb 2021

Description

The former municipality De Marne is located next to the Lauwersmeer and the Waddensea. It’s known as an area of intense agriculture, due to the fertile sea clay that’s part of its soil. Over time, this intense agriculture has led to several soil quality and biodiversity challenges that the region is now facing. Furthermore, here too, climate change has increasing effects on the salinization processes in the region. The pilot Landscape Inclusive Agriculture aims to integrate agriculture, nature and the landscape in better ways. Together with local farmers and other stakeholders, the Board of Government Advisors has developed a vision for the region. This vision states that in 2050 the usage of fertilizers has to be limited by promoting sustainable soil management. Furthermore, dairy farmers and arable farmers will be connected to improve collaboration and exchange of services and resources and the dykes, farmland borders and water bodies in the area have to form ecological connections in the landscape through better management. Finally, by retaining fresh water in water buffers and switching to silt resilient crops, the salinization of the region has to be managed. With all these measures, the project shows that climate adaptation can not only be achieved by megalomaniac developments, but also through collaborations and changes to working processes.
