Description

The University of San Carlos, in collaboration with Rotterdam University, and Hanze University of Applied Sciences, is once again taking a proactive role in the Annual River Scan Challenge. Our team has the responsibility of assessing the upstream portion of the Butuanon River, located near Brgy. Pulang Bato. Our primary objective is to identify and analyze the various issues currently impacting both the community and the river's ecosystem.

The initiative whilst taking the challenge of River Scan provides an insight to the ongoing crisis that the people in Barangay Pulang Bato experiences during these times of drought. The efforts of the government to foresee the dangers that might happen in the area are properly implemented through the construction of Riprap walls near the river to lessen the risk of flooding and the destruction this will cause to the citizens in the barangay. However, with the river currently dried up this also brought the people in Pulang Bato to be in great sorrow and worry as the temperature rises many people who make living out of the river are now saddened as there are no more fish to catch, no water to be used in their livelihood, and no income that can be gained from it through “sanding” .

This led to the team identifying that the lack of water is another aspect that needs to be addressed in the area as there is no certain time to know when the next rain will occur given that the El Niño Phenomenon is in full effect and the impact of climate change surpasses all expectations.
