Buhisan Dam

Problem Area - Rainwater Nuisance

Created at: 10 Oct 2017

Description

Buhisan Dam, located in Buhisan, Cebu City, Philippines, serves as a crucial water source for Cebu City and Metro Cebu. Constructed in 1911-1912 and maintained by the Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD), it is situated in the mountains of Barangay Buhisan within the Central Cebu Protected Landscape. Originally proposed by Sergio OsmeƱa Sr., the dam was built to address the need for a reliable water supply, particularly during cholera outbreaks and to prevent devastating fires. Funding was secured by Governor-General William Cameron Forbes, and American engineer Eusebius Julius Halsema supervised the project. Over the years, concerns have arisen about silting reducing the dam's capacity and safety, prompting calls for desilting and maintenance. The dam's surrounding area is also being developed for eco-tourism.
