Measures Heatstress

Green Walls

Created at: 19 Feb 2021

Description

A façade garden is a small strip of land in front of a house. In the city of Groningen, inhabitants can make a request at the municipality to receive a free façade garden. In turn, the municipality will remove the tiles in front of their homes and fill the gaps with soil. The inhabitants then have to arrange the plants and the care for them themselves. As a result of these façade gardens, whole streets brighten up, and a variety of plants and insects are attracted, resulting in a higher biodiversity. In addition, these façade gardens allow for excessive rainwater to be taken up by the soil, which prevents droughts and floodings. And in the gardens where plants are allowed to grow up along the front of a house, they provide a cooling effect during hot summers, making façade walls a fine climate adaptation measure in dense cities.

This measure has been a big success for a number of years. In 2018 and 2019, respectively 600 and 400 façade gardens have been developed by the municipality. Despite the developments around the corona virus, the municipality has even been able to develop a large number of gardens this year. As for example in the Kerklaan, where inhabitants have greened the streets with 26 façade gardens!
