Listruper Emswehr during the Christmas Floods of 2023 - Listrup, Emsbüren

Problem Area - Flood Vulnerability

Created at: 15 Jan 2024

Description

The Listruper Emswehr (Ems weir) in Emsbüren from the Listrup side during the Weihnachtshochwasser 2023 (Christmas Floods of 2023).

In the years 1825-1828, due to river regulation, a weir and a lock were built in Listrup to make the Ems navigable.

The previously wooden weir was replaced with stone walls in 1879-1881, which are still in use today. The skipper is also the lock master here - the lock is operated by hand. Conversion of the Ems weir into a rough ramp The Listruper Emswehr was converted into a rough ramp in 2008 as part of the Life Nature project. The aim was to restore the natural river dynamics. It ensures the continuity of the Ems at this point for fish and other aquatic animals. The banks of the Ems were unsealed over a length of 21.5 km, stone fill was removed and maintenance was stopped or reduced to a minimum. Despite the measures, navigability for recreational boats remains, but the Ems is given more space for natural developments. (VVV Emsbüren e.V., 2023)
