Description

Whangarei’s Pocket Park is located in the central city providing a multiuse space that connects Okara Shopping Centre to the Hatea Loop walkway. The park is situated on a linear site on the bank of Waiarohia Stream. The street frontage of the site connects main arterial route of Port Road to the Hatea Loop Huarahi o te Whai (Pathway of Opportunity) at the water side. It offers places for seating and play, which responds to the community provided feedback in regards to the Hatea Loop as the original project. The site banks onto the Waiarohia Stream; therefore, a sand play area was created to prevent flooding onto Port Road during extreme weather events. The steel structure of the original building was retained to preserve the history of the site, now becoming the gateway to the Hatea Loop. Two murals were created telling iconic stories linked to Whangarei.
