The Biochar project - farmers in Punjab (2023)

Reduction (CO2) with Biochar

Created at: 18 Nov 2023

Description

In India farmers are forced to produce many cropps a year. in order tot prepare the land for the next harvest, st stubbels are burned, creating massive air pollution that even reaches the capital city of Delhi

This pollution can be seen on satellite images and the smog can be seen from space. Moreover the problem is adressed regurlly in the national news in india.

In the Biochar project the farmers were helped by the Lay organisation which represented 27.000 farmers. The agricultural university of Punjab developed a nice method to reduce the problem of stubbels burning.

They created a system of controlled burning of the stubbels in earthen chambers. In one chamber it is possible to process the stubbels of approx 4 acres in one cycle. The required investement of one chamber is bout 150 dollar..

The effect is that the air pollution/smog is reduced by at least 50%. The biochar product can be used as a fertilizer and did the use of other fertilizers drop by 33 %. It is also noted that the crop's resultst rose by 19%
