first Liquid 3 - bioreactor - Makedonskastreet, Belgrade

Reduction (CO2) by Liquid 3 bioreactor

Created at: 03 Apr 2024

Description

The bioreactor contains six hundred litres of water and uses microalgae to bind carbon dioxide and produce pure oxygen through photosynthesis.

Serbia suffers a lot from smog caused by the emisions of coal and wood heating and the traffic which consist of mainly very old cars.

This bioreactor is a solution where it is nog possible to situate a tree. The microalgae replaces two, 10-year-old trees or 200 square metres of lawn. The advantage of microalgae is that they are 10 to 50 times more efficient than trees

The inventor is Dr Ivan Spasojevic, from the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research at the University of Belgrade.

The unit has an attractive design; it is powered by a solar panel and has a low wattage lighting system to provide security as a night light. It enhances the urban area where it is located, and in keeping with the human focussed nature of the device, there is a bench for passers by to relax, with USB ports for people to recharge their mobile devices.
