Britomart Green Walls

Building with Nature

Created at: 28 Oct 2022

Description

As a developed part of the Auckland CBD, Britomart holds the key to New Zealand's most sustainable and historic projects. One of these is the "green walls of Britomart" or Britomart East complex, which features 120m2 of live bio facades in its atrium. Te Ara Tahuhu street, which connects to the atrium, provides access to the underground train station at Britomart. In addition to increasing the area's air quality, noise reduction, thermal performance, and user connection to the environment, these unique facades also serve a number of other objectives. There are facades on the east and west sides of the atrium, as well as a glass ceiling that allows light to enter. The exterior is also living with a variety of blossoming plants, ferns, climbers, ground coverings, and both native and exotic epiphytes that together make up an ecosystem. The New Zealand Green Building Council awarded the Britomart East complex a five star accreditation for its facade, placing it among the top green infrastructures in the nation. The effectiveness of it and how it impacts the users are evidence for this. The one standout aspect of our new office space has been the green wall. In contrast to the generally hurried business world, it makes individuals pause and take the time to examine each aspect, which is significant.Additionally stated by the CEO of Cooper and Company “The investment made in these Green Walls have paid off with increased building value, high tenant retention and an improved green star rating.” demonstrating how the better air quality and connection to the environment are making the area more comfortable and healthier for its users. The utilisation of these facades in the Britomart region has considerably helped the users as the world moves towards mitigating climate change. We can therefore assume that the improved thermal performance and air quality have also helped the nearby and local ecosystems.
